As World War II planes rumbled loudly overhead in London, four-year-old Preston used the family
piano to recreate those sounds -- it's been that way ever since. He is
constantly absorbing the sounds of life. Today, these sounds
pass through the crucible of his creative genius and emerge not as
reproductions, but as something uniquely "Preston".
Trained at the Royal School of Music, Preston has been playing his beloved
piano professionally since the age of fourteen. At various times, he has
performed with traditional jazz, modern jazz, dance, pop, early rhythm and
blues, swing, new age, orchestral, and rock and roll groups. He has played
classical solo piano. Preston has enjoyed singing in church and
performance choirs and musicals as well.
Along with musical training and performance, Preston began to write
poetry at an early age. The two endeavors led to the creation of songs and
other musical compositions. He has written, and continues to write, in a
wide variety of venues. His earlier works were performed by various bands
and choirs, such as the Peabody Choir, a performance choir of the Peabody
Conservatory. Preston has composed for musicals and musical reviews, all well received in the Mid-Atlantic region. He has written and performed
contemporary pieces at the New Music Baltimore Series and new age music at
the International Music Festival held in College Park, MD. While in college,
Preston won first place every year he entered the Towson University Student
Contemporary Composition Competition.
He has composed the soundtrack for several documentaries, such as "To Fly
Without Wings" narrated by Orson Wells. The former PBS series "Week Night
Live" has featured Preston and his works and a documentary is currently
under production about his "Woodwind Quintet". Preston has attended the
world premier performance of his "Graphic Variations" by the Susquehanna
Symphony and his "Tapestry for Strings" by the Harford County String Youth
Orchestra. The Harford County Piano Teacher’s Association has enjoyed the
premier presentation of his "Modular Etudes", a collection of intermediate
piano pedagogy pieces written in the association’s honor.
So many works presented to the public, and yet they are only the tip of
the proverbial iceberg. Shelves and drawers of music exist and so much
remains to be captured on the written page and soundtrack. "Sum of Each" is Preston’s first presentation of his songs to the international audience.
