Sum
of Each’s original music by Maryland pianist/composer Preston Hutt
grooves through experimental mixes of jazz, blues, world, classical and
contemporary sounds drawing listeners into a dynamic musical
tapestry as performed by its five experienced musicians.
Preston’s simple, poignant lyrics and keyboards
are backed by the sounds of Richard Presberry on bass and back-up vocals;
Mark Leppo on drums; son, Jason Hutt, on guitar and vocals; and daughter,
Jennifer Hutt on violin. All are thrilled to be playing some of this
longtime composer’s most interesting music!
Preston was first trained at the Royal
School of Music in his native London and has been playing the piano
professionally since the age of fourteen. Along with the classical piano, he
has performed with traditional and modern jazz, early rhythm and blues,
dance, swing, rock, new age and orchestral ensembles both in England and the
United States.
The former PBS series Week Night
Live has featured Preston and his works, and he has composed the
soundtrack for several documentaries, including To Fly Without Wings
narrated by Orson Wells. New Music Baltimore, International Music Festival
at UMBC, Music in the Great Hall, Peabody Conservatory, and Towson
University are some of the other Baltimore venues that have features
Preston’s compositions. More recently, he has composed a sextet,
"Interlace," written for the Music in the Great Hall’s thirteenth
anniversary celebration. This series has also performed Mr. Hutt’s
"Entr’acte."
Jason and Jennifer are accomplished
musicians in their own right. Jason is guitarist for Arc and Sender, a
Baltimore band on the High Two label from Philadelphia. Jennifer plays
violin and sings for local rock band Scene 24. She also does regular session
work with other musicians in studio and performance settings in Baltimore
and New York. Jason and Jennifer often perform together as a duo, sometimes
joined by their father on keyboards.
Rich Presberry is also an experienced
composer and lead singer/guitarist of Scene 24 for the past nine years.
Before Scene 24, he was lead singer and guitarist for band World of
Difference. Drummer Mark Leppo has performed and recorded with many bands in
Baltimore for over two decades Until his recent retirement, Mark had spent
fifteen years as an adjunct music faculty member at Harford Community.
Since the release of its self-titled
debut "Sum of Each" in 2001, the group has played venues in Baltimore
including the Recher Theatre, Winchester’s Comedy Club, The
Whole Gallery, and Ze Mean Bean Café. They have also played at charity
events and festivals including "Party for the People" (a
Leukemia/Lymphoma Society fundraiser), ArtQuest in Bel Air,
Maryland, as well as private parties.
Described enthusiastically by some as
"music like I’ve never heard before," the sounds of Sum of Each are quickly
attracting fans in Baltimore and beyond.
